A natural supplement once dismissed as hype just helped older adults with a serious vascular disease walk further.
The NICE trial enrolled 90 older adults diagnosed with peripheral artery disease — a condition in which arterial narrowing cuts blood flow to the legs, causing pain and limiting mobility — and randomly assigned them to six months of nicotinamide riboside, resveratrol, a combination of both, or a placebo. The primary outcome was the distance covered in a standardized six-minute walk test, a validated measure of functional capacity that strongly predicts independence and survival in aging populations.
